Indonesia's goal of reaching the U20 World Cup was dashed after a 1-3 loss to Uzbekistan in the 2025 U20 Asian Cup group stage.

With a second straight defeat following their 3-0 opening-round loss to Iran in group C, Indonesia's early elimination marks a disappointing end to their campaign. They failed to meet the requirement, which is getting at least a draw against Uzbekistan on Sunday night to keep their hope of passing the group stage alive.

Coach Indra Sjafri's side faced an uphill battle in the Shenzhen Youth Football Training Center as Uzbekistan had 63% possession and completed 588 passes at an accuracy rate of 89%. On the other side, Indonesia managed only 340 passes at a 76.5% accuracy rate. Although both teams registered four shots on target, Uzbekistan's chances were more threatening.

The match began cautiously, with Indonesia defending stoutly until the 20th minute. Uzbekistan broke through when captain Muhammadali Urinbaev headed in from Saidkhon Khamidov's precise cross. Urinbaev celebrated by donning a traditional tubeteika hat and saluting the flag.

However, Indonesia responded quickly. Jens Raven's well-placed strike, following a neat buildup involving Marselinus Ola, leveled the score, giving Indonesia their first goal of the tournament and a much-needed boost for the rest of the game.

Despite creating many chances, Indonesia struggled to maintain their defensive shape in the second half. Just minutes after the break, Daler Tukhsanov's backheel pass set up Abdugafur Khaydarov for a thunderous left-footed finish into the top corner. A third goal followed when Saidumarkhon Saidnurullaev capitalized on a defensive mistake during a corner, heading home with ease.

Uzbekistan eased off after taking a 3-1 lead, while Indonesia's attacks lacked cohesion and accuracy. The defeat, combined with earlier results, confirmed Indonesia's and Yemen's early exits from the tournament. Uzbekistan and Iran, both with six points, advanced to the quarterfinals.

In group A, Qatar and Kyrgyzstan were eliminated, while China and Australia moved on. Group B remains competitive, with all four teams still in contention. Group D could also see early decisions on Monday, as Japan and South Korea aim to secure their spots by defeating Syria and Thailand.

The 2025 U20 Asian Cup takes place from Feb. 12 to March 1 in China, with the top four teams earning qualification for the 2025 U20 World Cup.
