Indonesia suffered a heartbreaking 0-1 loss to the Philippines on home soil on Saturday, ending their ASEAN Cup campaign in the group stage.
First half's red card
Both teams began the match cautiously, aware of the high stakes. The Philippines were forced to substitute goalkeeper Deyto in the 10th minute after he sustained an injury following a collision with Indonesian forward Hannan. Backup goalkeeper Kammeraad stepped in and would later prove instrumental to the Philippines' victory.
Indonesia came closest to opening the scoring in the 39th minute when Ferdinan’s shot hit the post after a brilliant solo run. However, the hosts' situation worsened when their captain, Ferrari, was sent off in the 42nd minute for an elbow on Philippine captain Aguinaldo. Despite a VAR review, the referee upheld the red card decision, reducing Indonesia to 10 men. The first half ended goalless, with both teams creating chances but failing to capitalize.
Penalty seals the game
The second half saw the Philippines take advantage of their numerical superiority. In the 63rd minute, Pratama Arhan handled a cross from Tabinas inside the box, prompting the referee to award a penalty after a VAR consultation. Kristensen calmly converted, shooting straight down the middle to give the Philippines a 1-0 lead.
Indonesia, despite being a man down, pushed forward in search of an equalizer. They created opportunities through counterattacks, with Rokky coming close in the 54th minute. However, Kammeraad's heroics in goal denied Indonesia multiple times.
The match grew increasingly heated in the closing stages. In stoppage time, the Philippines received three yellow cards for time-wasting and aggressive fouls. Indonesia introduced Ronaldo in the 90th minute to bolster their attack, but the young striker's long-range effort was their only notable attempt in the final moments.
After 11 minutes of added time, the referee blew the final whistle, sealing Indonesia's elimination from the tournament while sending the Philippines to advance as Group B runners-up.
The Philippines will face the top team from Group A, Thailand, in the semifinals next week.
