The 42.195 km race in Wilmington, Delaware, on April 20 attracted approximately 700 runners, but the highlight occurred in the final stretch.

The 24-year-old Mello commanded a dominant lead as he approached the finish line. Confident in his victory, he began to ease his pace, raising his hands in celebration and glancing down at his watch to check his final time.

Unbeknownst to Mello, 24-year-old Joshua Jackson was maintaining his absolute maximum pace right behind him. Having endured over 2.5 hours of grueling competition, the Pennsylvania native channeled his remaining energy into a decisive sprint.

While Mello was still soaking in the premature celebration, Jackson surged forward from his blind spot, overtaking him in an instant and leaving finish-line officials staring in shock, Fox News reported.

A spectator's video shows Joshua Jackson crossing the finish line ahead of Carson Mello at the Delaware Marathon on April 20, 2026.

A photo released by the organizers perfectly captured the contrasting image of the two athletes at the finish line. Mello appears entirely relaxed, casually reaching for his watch to look at the time, while Jackson drives his body forward with every last ounce of strength.

The gap between the two was less than a second. Jackson crossed the finish line first to take the title with a time of 2 hours, 43 minutes and 13.51 seconds. Mello clocked in at 2 hours, 43 minutes, and 14.46 seconds.

Spectator footage from the stands showed that when Mello cruised toward the tape, the race announcer had already begun calling his name as the champion. Seconds later, the announcer's voice turned into pure astonishment as Jackson sprinted to the finish line. Spectators on the sides of the route could be heard screaming for Jackson to catch up to Mello.

Videos capturing the incident immediately went viral on social media. Many were surprised at Mello's error, with a user noting it was a mistake that should never happen at any competitive level.

"Oh my god. That should never have happened. He must have been so embarrassed and angry with himself," another commented.
