In their opening matches of Group A, Mexico easily defeated South Africa 2-0, while South Korea came from behind to beat the Czech Republic 2-1. In the group's next round, the Czech Republic disappointed again by drawing 1-1 against South Africa, leaving the match at Guadalajara between Mexico and South Korea likely to decide the group winner and the first ticket to the Round of 32.
