The Grizzlies confirmed the devastating news on Tuesday. In an official statement, the club expressed sorrow over Clarke’s sudden passing and extended their deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. He is the latest active NBA player to pass away during his playing career, following the death of Bryce DeJean-Jones in 2016.

While the official cause of death has not yet been disclosed, Clarke's sudden passing has sent shockwaves through the American basketball community and the world. He had recently concluded his seventh NBA season, spending his entire professional career as an experienced member of the Grizzlies.

Just over a month prior to his death, the Canadian-born player was arrested in Cross County, Arkansas. He faced multiple charges, including improper passing, possession of a controlled substance, drug trafficking and fleeing the scene.

Authorities alleged that Clarke drove over 160 kph while attempting to evade law enforcement. A subsequent search of his vehicle yielded over 230 grams of kratom, a herbal extract native to Southeast Asia.

According to Mayo Clinic, kratom acts as a stimulant in lower doses but produces pain-relieving and anti-anxiety effects at higher doses. While legal in several U.S. states, it is strictly classified as a Schedule I controlled substance in Arkansas.

Following Clarke's arrest on April 1, Grizzlies head coach Tuomas Iisalo declined to discuss the matter.

These off-court troubles coincided with the most challenging period of Clarke's career. Selected 21st overall in the 2019 NBA Draft, he quickly established himself as a fan favorite in Memphis, earning praise for his defensive versatility, rebounding skills and high-energy style of play.

During the 2019-20 season, Clarke made the NBA All-Rookie Team after averaging a career-best 12.1 points and 5.9 rebounds per game. His consistent form was rewarded in October 2022 when he signed a four-year, $50 million contract extension with the Grizzlies.

However, a series of severe injuries slowed down his career. Clarke appeared in just six games during the 2023-24 season following a torn Achilles tendon. His struggles continued into the 2025-26 campaign, as ongoing calf and knee issues severely limited his availability.

After suffering a calf strain in December 2025, the Grizzlies announced in late March 2026 that Clarke would require more time to heal and would miss the remainder of the season, though he was fully expected to return next year.

The prolonged absence forced him to sit out 46 games of a disappointing, injury-plagued season for the Grizzlies.

Born in Vancouver, Canada, Clarke was a standout collegiate athlete. After beginning his college career at San Jose State, he transferred to Gonzaga, where his explosive jumping ability captured the attention of NBA scouts, despite him being considered somewhat undersized for a traditional NBA forward.

Throughout his seven years in the NBA, Clarke remained exclusively with the Grizzlies. Widely beloved by his teammates for his calm demeanor and unselfish spirit, the basketball world now mourns the loss of a talented player.

Following the announcement of his death, many players and sports figures have taken to social media to send their condolences to Clarke and his family.
