Mikel Arteta's side clinched Arsenal's first Premier League title in 22 years on Sunday, ending the season with a 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace. The historic victory triggered jubilant celebrations across Uganda, where Arsenal boast a massive following.
However, the joy turned fatal in the capital city of Kampala. A 34-year-old motorcycle taxi driver, identified only as Denis, died following an alleged confrontation after watching the match at a local viewing location.
Kampala police spokeswoman Rachel Kawala confirmed that the incident occurred at approximately 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, according to Express.
"Preliminary reports indicate that Denis - who was reportedly an Arsenal FC supporter - got into a misunderstanding with a man. His name is Musiramu, and he is said to be a fan of Manchester United," Kawala stated.
According to Kawala, the disagreement quickly escalated into a physical altercation. The suspect allegedly struck Denis on the head, causing him to fall to the ground and die instantly. Authorities are actively working to trace and arrest the suspect.
The Premier League has a passionate fanbase in Uganda, with crowds often gathering at viewing locations to watch matches on large screens.
Unfortunately, these intense sporting rivalries have occasionally been linked to a string of violent cases in the East African nation.
Local newspaper Nile Post noted that the fatal altercation has raised fresh concerns regarding violence stemming from football rivalries, particularly in urban communities where supporters frequently gather to watch the games.
